Understanding the causes of OCD can be challenging. Nonetheless, the symptoms are not difficult to identify. Coping with this mental condition is not easy, and it often does not go away without medication or therapy. CBD is one of the plausible treatments for OCD. In this article, we will explore the feasibility of this option. We will also discuss other vital things you need to know about this disease and CBD.

CBD And OCD: What Is OCD?

OCD is a mental disorder, which involves recurring, undesirable ideas, thoughts, or sensations. These thoughts are intrusive and often compel an individual to carry out an action repeatedly. These compulsive behaviors can involve cleaning, hand washing, or checking things. For example, a person suffering from OCD can go back to check if the door is locked after checking thrice. It may look as if the person is meticulous initially. However, these repetitive actions often interfere with a person’s daily activities.

Note that it is not everyone who has routines or behaviors they repeatedly express are battling OCD. Many people have things they do all over again. A lot of people also have thoughts they meditate upon continuously. Nevertheless, these thoughts and behaviors do not interfere with their day to day activities. So, it is not yet OCD until the person is struggling to perform his or her daily tasks. When people dealing with OCD fail to carry out these persistent behaviors, it causes them great distress.

People with OCD want to stop these recurrent thoughts and actions, but they are at their mercy. Unfortunately, many people across the globe are battling this mental ailment. If they are around ignorant people, such people may be told that they are demon-possessed. They may also suffer discrimination, which makes the journey to recovery tougher. Such people may find it difficult to handle social situations and may also suffer from depression due to poor support.

CBD And OCD: Symptoms

Before you can consider CBD and OCD, it is vital that you are conversant with the symptoms of the disease. “Obsessions” and “compulsions” are two critical terms when it comes to OCD. Nonetheless, it is possible only to notice either obsessive or compulsive symptoms. In other words, a person may have obsessive symptoms but not compulsive symptoms and vice versa. Nonetheless, both categories of symptoms are capable of interfering with an individual’s life. They can both affect the quality of a person’s life and make social and professional functioning difficult.

Obsession symptoms are repeated, unwanted desires and urges that bring about anxiety or distress. They include fear of contamination, persistent need for orderliness, and incessant doubt. Other common themes include horrible and aggressive thoughts about hurting yourself and your loved ones. They can also take the shape of inappropriate affections towards sexual objects. The person may also have irrepressible fear of contamination. Such a person will be too afraid to touch things others have touched.

Compulsion symptoms are persistent behaviors that an individual feels driven to exhibit. The person will only feel better after carrying out these tasks. The execution of these tasks does not offer inherent pleasure but only temporal relief from anxiety. Compulsive symptoms often involve counting, arranging items, following a strict routine, and cleaning. It can also include checking the cooker repeatedly to ensure it is off or arranging objects in a certain way. It can also involve saying words or mantra repeatedly out of fear or anxiety. If you notice these symptoms, you need to explore CBD and OCD or other treatments.

CBD And OCD: Causes, Risk Factors, And Complications

CBD And OCDAccording to the Mayo Clinic, the cause of OCD is not clear. Some scholars believe that it is a result of an alteration in the brain functions or body chemistry. It is also likely that some specific genes are responsible for these compulsions and obsessions. Nonetheless, science has yet to identify these genes. Another possible cause of OCD is learning. It is likely that a person learned compulsive behaviors and obsessive fears through observation of family members.

More so, you can increase the chances of having OCD by engaging in some destructive habits. For example, substance abuse is an OCD risk factor. Having parents or relatives battling this disorder also makes you susceptible to having it. People that have traumatic experiences or exposure to stressful events are also likely to have OCD. The events can trigger routines, negative thoughts, and emotional distress. Moreover, being a patient of other mental disorders like depression and anxiety makes an individual likely to have OCD.

OCD can trigger other physical and mental health issues. So, it is vital to leverage CBD and OCD or other treatments on time. For example, a person can spend excessive time participating in rituals. This routine will prevent the person from having enough time for other meaningful activities. The person will struggle to go for work, classes, or attend social activities. If things get out of hand, the person may contact dermatitis as a result of excessive hand washing. Such people will also have troubled interpersonal relationships, which can lead to suicidal ideations.

Conventional Treatments

Besides CBD and OCD, other treatment options exist. OCD patients have been using these options with mixed results. The desire to obtain relief makes some OCD patients resort to self-medication, which can be dangerous. The most common treatment for this mental illness is cognitive-behavioral therapy. This treatment helps to reveal OCD patients’ underlying fears and thoughts to address them. It is an exposure and response treatment. It involves exposing patients to situations that provoke compulsive behaviors and create anxiety. Nonetheless, this treatment is limited because it is only useful for people that can easily recreate the conditions.

Another conventional treatment is the use of anti-depressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This treatment is also used for people suffering from depression. However, a higher dose is used when treating OCD patients. It often takes six to twelve weeks to notice an improvement in the person’s condition. Unfortunately, about 50% of the people that have used SSRIs did not get positive results from it. Such people often opt for antipsychotic medications. However, employing antipsychotics often comes with numerous side effects.

The limitations of cognitive-behavioral therapy and the excessive side effects of SSRIs make them less appealing. Many people will prefer better options. CBD and OCD are some of the choices medical experts consider. This is because it does not have side effects like SSRIs because it is a natural medication. Nonetheless, is it a worthwhile approach in terms of effectiveness? We will look at what research has to say about this in the next section.

Is It Worth It?

There is no point in considering CBD and OCD if it cannot provide relief for patients. Many people have claimed to have their conditions improve after leveraging CBD and OCD. Nonetheless, it is safer to stick to facts rather than the claims of people. Research has proven that CBD is effective in treating anxiety and depression. Note that anxiety and depression are the two main symptoms of OCD. So, it makes perfect sense to consider CBD and OCD.  Unfortunately, no human studies have been able to evaluate this link.

Cannabinoid receptors are present in the brain in areas involving behavioral and emotional reactions. They are also available in brain parts responsible for learning, decision making, and memory.  Moreover, CB2 receptors have vital roles in inflammation and pain. Nevertheless, they are also involved in mood regulations. So, it is not surprising that they play key roles in suppressing depression. Cannabinoids are present in CBD, and they stimulate CB1 and CB2 receptors. So, the chances are high that CBD and OCD is a viable link.

Research on the effect of CBD on other anxiety-related mental health issues has been positive. For example, studies on generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have shown that CBD is a fantastic option. If this medication can be effective in treating these mental diseases, CBD and OCD is a worthwhile option. However, you should not consider CBD and OCD without contacting your doctor. You can endanger your life by experimenting with drugs.

Legality

In order to understand CBD and OCD’s legality, you need to know the difference between CBD and THC. Some people claim that they derived relief for OCD from THC. This assertion is reasonable because THC has similar medical benefits as CBD. However, they are not the same. Indeed, CBD and THC are extracted from the cannabis plant. Nonetheless, THC has psychoactive properties, which makes it have intoxicating effects on people. So, it is not legal in the US. You cannot be found in possession of this substance without government approval.

Furthermore, the relationship between CBD and THC makes the former’s legality tricky. The good news is that CBD is legal in the US. So, it is safe to leverage CBD and OCD without being in trouble with the authorities. Things were different before the Hemp Farming Act of 2018. This federal government regulation makes it legal to take advantage of CBD and OCD in the US. Nonetheless, CBD’s legality is still complicated despite the Hemp Farming Act of 2018.

You cannot base your use of CBD and OCD on the federal government directives only. You also have to be conversant with CBD laws in your state. Some state does not approve the consumption of some CBD products. For example, New York does not approve of the use of CBD edibles. Meanwhile, CBD is legal in the state. So, you need to consult an attorney in the state to get first-hand CBD And information on CBD laws. Meanwhile, there is no point in using THC instead of CBD. Apart from its intoxicating effect, research also shows that it worsens anxiety.

How To Buy Quality CBD

You cannot leverage CBD and OCD if you do not purchase quality products. Unfortunately, it is not easy to obtain excellent products because of the market’s nature. The FDA has not approved any non-prescription CBD product. So, the industry is not regulated. It is not difficult to find companies selling CBD products. You will be able to find many online and offline outlets offering this medication. However, many of them sell inferior quality products.

In your best interest, you should have a meticulous approach when purchasing CBD. Do not be deceived by what is written on the label. Many products contain far less CBD than what is on the label. Besides, some products contain contaminants, such as pesticides. Therefore, when considering CBD and OCD, contact a reputable company. You can identify such organizations by reading online reviews. From customer feedback, you can know an organization that is not worth your time.

More so, you should check for a third-party lab test on the company’s website. This report shows the exact quantity of CBD in the product. You cannot afford to buy products that will only worsen your condition. So, take your time to do your homework before trusting a company.

Conclusion

No one wants to be a victim of OCD because of the devastating effect it can have on an individual. Nonetheless, it is not an incurable disease. Many people have found success in using cognitive behavioral therapy and SSRIs. However, CBD for OCD is a more effective option because of its low side effects and wide range applicability. Note that many companies out there sell poor quality products. Therefore, you need to ensure that you obtain your product from a reputable company.
